[MANHATTAN, NY.] AN ODE TO KARLHEINZ WEINBERGER. CHLOE CHIPPENDALE FOR AUTRE’S SS26 “SURVEILLANCE” ISSUE
Before social media, youth culture was localized, radical, and full of anxious abandon. Free from the burden of the public gaze, which now shapes behavior and censors expression, young people could experiment with identity, fashion, and style without
being consumed by algorithmic monoculture. In 1958, Swiss photographer Karlheinz Weinberger (1921-2006) turned his lens to the Halbstarken, meaning “half- strong,” a rising anti-authoritarian teenage subculture that rode motorcycles and tore up concert halls in postwar Zurich.
Autre’s SS26 “Surveillance” Issue is an urgent dossier on our age of hyper-surveillance and traces how we arrived at this disorienting era of total capture. Preorder the issue
now (link in bio) and receive a full digital preview delivered to your inbox immediately after checkout.
